Bailey Hill

Bailey Hill is the site of the former Norman Motte and Bailey Castle, originally dating back to the 11th Century. The site has been a recreational park since the 1920s and even used to have tennis courts and a bowling green. It’s thought this site is where the town got its name from. The story goes that Norman settlers used the name ‘mont-haut’, meaning high hill, which became corrupted through the years until it became Mold.

Thanks to winning a National Lottery grant, the site has had a much needed re-development and now includes a visitor centre and performance space for local groups. Its a great place to spend an afternoon, learning about this important historical site and taking in the stunning views from the hill. Pack a picnic and make a real day of it.

Street Market, Farmers Market and Fairtrade Shopping

When you’re in Mold, be sure to go to the street market, held every Wednesday and Saturday. There are usually in excess of 70 stalls, selling a variety of items including fresh fruit and vegetables, cheese, meat, crockery, clothes and plants. In addition, there is an indoor market open Monday to Saturday plus a farmers market every 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month! It’s the ideal way to sample the local produce before you buy and get a real taste of Wales.

As well as bustling markets, Mold has over 100 independent shops mixed with a selection of high street names. It’s a proud Fairtrade town, with many shops and cafes selling Fairtrade products.

Catch a film or a show at Theatr Clwyd

The award winning Theatr Clwyd is a crucial part of the local community in Mold. You can watch a film here or even catch a West End show. Since opening in 1976, the stages have been graced by actors such as Anthony Hopkins, Vanessa Redgrave, Timothy Dalton and Owen Teale. In 2018, Theatr Clwyd won an Olivier Award for Home, I’m Darling, starring Katherine Parkinson and Richard Harrington.

There are 3 stages, a cinema, café, bar and art galleries inside. In addition, the centre has a varied programme of visual arts, film, theatre, music, dance and comedy performances, so there is something to suit every taste. The centre is undergoing a redevelopment project, ensuring it is accessible to everyone. Check their website for shows and to book tickets. There is a car park on site with a small charge, which goes towards the running of the centre.

Go to a festival

Mold is host to a wide range of festivals and events. There’s the annual Food and Drink Festival, Novemberfest, the biggest carnival in the county; the town Carnival, a Christmas market (depending what time of year you visit) plus music festivals like Live on the Square and the North Wales Blues and Soul Festival. This bustling market town is the perfect setting for events so be sure to look up whats on when you plan your visit!

There is plenty to do here, from taking a short stroll to heading further afield and exploring the breathtaking Clwydian Range and Dee Valley. It has an easy to follow discovery trail and accessible pathways all around the park as well as to the hills and valleys. Its also perfect for cycling and you can even abseil in Devil's Gorge!
