Afternoon tea with a twist
The Wild Boar, Kendal
Dubbed the ‘Afternoon Tea with a difference’, this unique afternoon tea experience at the Wild Boar is not your usual tea and pastries. You won’t find finger sandwiches here, instead you’ll indulge in pigs in blankets, mini fish & chips and beef sliders. They haven’t done away with all traditions though; their alternative afternoon tea is finished with classic scones with jam & clotted cream. There are gluten free and vegetarian options available too.
Watch a cheese rolling competition
For a day out with a difference, head to Brockworth in Gloucestershire for the annual cheese rolling competition. It’s as unique as it sounds but also exactly what is sounds like. A wheel of Double Gloucester cheese is released at the top of the hill and then competitors race down the 180m slope, the first to cross the finish line wins the wheel of cheese. This crazy tradition is thought to be over 600 years old and today, people travel from all over the world to witness this extreme sport.
Visit the Roman Baths, Bath
The Roman Baths are located below modern street level, waiting for you to discover their 2000 year history. The terrace you come to when first entering the site overlooks part of the baths but doesn’t give you the whole picture. The site of the baths extends under nearby streets and squares, you wouldn’t even realise from the terrace above! It’s no surprise a visit here is among some of the most unique experiences in England.
In Roman Britain, this site was one of the greatest religious spas of the ancient world, where people would come to worship the goddess Sulis Minerva and bathe in the waters of the natural thermal springs. The waters still flow with hot water today!
The Roman Baths complex is made up of 4 main parts; the Sacred Spring, the Roman Temple, the Roman Bath House and ‘finds from Roman baths’. You can even walk on the original Roman pavements and see the ruins of the Temple of Sulis Minerva as well as explore artefacts from the Baths.
It’s advisable to buy tickets in advance, especially during peak times.
Tour the longest show cave in England
White Scar Cave, North Yorkshire
White Scar Cave is based in Ingleton, North Yorkshire and is the longest show cave in England. Take a tour of this fascinating, natural marvel featuring underground streams and waterfalls, flowstone, prehistoric mud pools, and the cavern known as ‘Battlefield Cavern’.
The cave has lighting and walkways installed throughout, meaning you can walk right past cascading waterfalls, inbetween massive banks of flowstone and into the ice-age Battlefield Cavern and see the thousands of stalactites that adorn its walls and ceiling.
A tour takes approx 80 minutes and you can either pre-book your ticket online or pay on the day. Check the website for up today information as tours are weather dependant.
Let nature play you a song
The Singing Ringing Tree, Burnley
Possibly one of the most unique experiences in England is to hear a song played by nature. The award winning sculpture ‘The Singing Ringing Tree’ in Burnley is constructed of galvanised steel pipes, stacked and arranged in the shape of a tree bending to the wind. As the wind blows, it plays a beautiful tune and the windier it is, the stronger the music.
