The market town of Llanelli is the largest town in the country of Carmarthenshire. It sits on the Lougher estuary and has a wonderful mix of history and culture for visitors to discover. Its also home to one Wales’ four professional rugby union teams, The Scarletts, so there is a huge rugby culture here too. In this post, we’ll go over the best things to do in Llanelli Wales.

Walk, or cycle, the Millennium Coastal Path

The beautiful Millennium Coastal Path stretches 13 miles along the Carmarthenshire coastline. It is mostly flat so is perfect for a stroll or gentle bike ride and suitable for families too. Along the way, you’ll see plenty of points of interest and stunning viewpoints plus refreshment stops.

The route has been divided in to four sections so you can cover as much or as little as you want, maybe break it up over a few days and make the most of your trip to Llanelli! Check the Discover Carmarthenshire website for details of start points and parking.

Parc Howard Museum

The Parc Howard Museum and Art Gallery is set in 24 acres of beautiful parkland. It tells the story of Llanelli’s history and features paintings, artworks and locally made pottery dating from the early 1900s. It has recently undergone refurbishment work and the first phase opened to the public in 2023, with the second phase opening in 2024. The new accessible-friendly reception will feature a gift shop and coffee shop, so you can grab a drink and soak in the beautiful views!

There is no onsite car park due to the nature of the location but the nearest car park is at Thomas/Edgar Street, approx. an 8 minute walk away.

Watch a Rugby game at Parc Y Scarlets

The town of Llanelli is synonymous with Welsh rugby and is proud of its beloved home team, The Scarlets. The Parc Y Scarlets stadium is impressive and the atmosphere on game days is unrivalled. Check the calendar to score tickets to a game and cheer on the team!

Llanelli Wetlands Centre

The Llanelli wetlands centre is a 450 acre protected area made up of lagoons, streams, lakes and salt marshes. The reserve is home to may wonderful creatures including otters, water voles, rare birds, seasonal migratory birds, insects plus rare wild orchids. In their own words, the Llanelli Wetlands Centre ‘is not simply birds; it is exploring, playing, feeding and getting up-close-and-personal to some of nature’s most wonderful wildlife’.

You can get invoked in activities like pond dipping, bug hunting or just explore the reserve area, looking for butterflies, flamingos and wildlife. They have an onsite cafe where you can get drinks and snacks plus there are seasonal events and activities that take place throughout the year.

Book your tickets through their website. Adult entry is £9.54, children between 4-17 is £6.13, children under 4 go free! Its also free to visit the gift shop and cafe if you fancy popping by, there is free car parking onsite.

Llanelly House

This beautiful, Grade I listed Georgian house is said to be one of the finest examples of of early Georgian architecture. You can take a tour of this magnificent house, stepping back in time, first to the 18th Century, seeing how the Georgians lived. Then, you’ll move on to the Victorian era and learn of the scandalous ‘upstairs, downstairs’ tales that are echoing within the walls, waiting to be heard!

As part of a renovation project in 2013, a wonderful bistro was created where you can stop in for breakfast, lunch or grab a coffee on your way through.

Tours take place on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays at 11am. You’ll need to book in advance and on the day, allow around 90 mins for the tour. Adult tickets are £8.50, children 4-12 are £5, under 4s go free. The house is in the town itself so parking will be in one of the nearby, paid local car parks.
